The Joy of Hands On Learning: VPK Learns About The Human Body

Special thanks to Michelle Thorpe who recently took time out of her busy schedule to speak with our prekindergarten classes about her career as a surgical nurse at Countryside Mease Hospital. The students had an amazing time learning about their bones and organs. Additionally, Mrs. Thorpe demonstrated what steps occur during some surgical procedures such as a hip replacement. Our young scholars also experienced handling a syringe, putting on a hairnet, mask and gloves just like a real nurse. Everyone had a wonderful time while experiencing hands on learning.

Alumni Spotlight: Anna Williams, Class of 2016

Espiritu Alumni, Anna Williams, is an ambassador for the Side-Out Foundation. Anna is currently raising money to help support patients with stage 4 breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease and the least funded area of research. Anna follows in the footsteps of Jane Wickett, another Espiritu alumni and daughter of Coach Mikki Wickett, who successfully launched the Think Pink Rally event for ESCS last year and earned a scholarship from her efforts. So far, Anna has raised donations from the Espiritu Think Pink volleyball spirit game a couple weeks ago and a pink dress-down day last week at CCC, where she is currently in her junior year. Espiritu will host a pink dress-down day next month for the same cause, so please stay tuned. If you wish to learn more about Anna and the Side-Out Foundation, please click here.

I Can Eat A Rainbow: The Importance of Healthy Eating

Special thanks to Jen Galligan and her team for taking the time to come and teach our preschool students the importance of eating fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy well-balanced lifestyle.
Our students learned the importance of eating foods in a variety of colors and that they should try and eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Jen works with the Children’s Wellness and Safety Center St. Joseph’s Children’s Mease Countryside Hospital which provides resources, programs and services to children and their families.

National Geographic Bee: Over Sixty-Two Espiritu Students To Participate

Espiritu Santo Catholic School will once again be a part of the National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee. The GeoBee is an annual competition organized by the National Geographic Society, designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from across the United States will compete for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee Champion.
ESCS will have a preliminary competition in December for all interested students.  The final competition will take place in January, where the 10 ESCS students with the highest scores, one from each grade level and five others, compete to determine who will be the ESCS champion and advance to the state competition.  The ESCS champion will take an online test and the top 100 of the highest-scoring students will represent their school at the State GeoBee.  Last year our ESCS school champion, Matthew Peralta, was one of these finalists and went on to compete in the Florida State GeoBee in Jacksonville.
The winners of the State GeoBees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., next May, to participate in the GeoBee national championship, competing for cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll.
